Shingle Roof Repair - How To Do It Yourself
Shingle roof repair work is usually very easy and you can do it yourself. This way, you can also cut down the roof repair cost substantially. Sometimes, because of cracked or missing roof shingles, a roof starts developing leaks. You definitely cannot replace the entire roof for such minor localized damages. The only way is to repair the same. Repairing the shingles is not very difficult, but locating the exact damage is.
How To Locate The Damages
- You can start by looking around every vent or chimney and see if there are any gaps in the lines of roof cement or breaks in the caulking or flashing.
- Likewise, you should also look at each and every location where two surfaces meet.
- Another good way is to mark the leak point and try to look for missing, curled, or damaged shingles.
- Sometimes, leaks are caused because of the internal deterioration of the shingles. Therefore, if you are unable to locate the damages, you had better go for the shingle roof repair services of a professional roofer.
- If you can lift the shingles right off the roof without any difficulty, it indicates that the shingles are rotten.
Curled Back Shingles
If the shingles are curled back, you can reattach the same using asphalt roof cement. However, the exact procedure will depend upon the specific weather condition. For example, if the weather is cold, you will not be able to flatten out the curled shingles straightaway, as you may end up breaking the same because shingles become very brittle in this weather. Therefore, you must soften the same before attempting to flatten the edges of the shingles. On the other hand, if the weather is warm; you are not likely to have any difficulty in straightening out the curled shingles.
How To Soften A Brittle Shingle
In cold weather when the shingles are usually brittle, you can soften the shingles using a flame-spreader nozzle and a propane torch. You have to be very careful while you are applying the flame to the curled edges, as more heat may result in the shingles catching fire while your objective is to provide just enough heat to soften the same. Once done successfully, you can now go ahead with the shingle roof repair work and straighten out the edges.
How To Reattach The Shingle
Once you have flattened the shingles, you can reattach the same by applying asphalt roof cement to its bottom – not at the entire bottom surface, but just a decent dollop of cement at the four corners of the shingle. Once the cement is applied generously, you can firmly press the shingle at its exact location.
Missing, Rotten, Or Torn Shingles
There is no way for roofing repair if the shingles are missing, rotten, or torn. The only way is to replace them with new ones. If you find evidence that there is a large area affected with rotten shingles, you should probably leave the home roof repair work for a professional roofing contractor or roofing company. In fact, in case of more severe damage, you may even have to consider replacing the old roof with a new roof system. However, if a small area is affected, it is probably a do it yourself roof repair work. You can easily replace the same yourself. A temporary solution is to cut patches from copper or aluminum in the size of the shingle.
You may also encounter several other shingle roof repair issues. For example, while you are looking around a chimney or dormer, you might find that the metal flashing is not properly caulked. In this case, you can use roof cement in a caulking gun and fill the joints. If you find a worn or cracked area, you can use a putty knife to apply roof cement.
